About

David Mishra-Newbery

A yoga teacher since 2009, David Mishra-Newbery offers a practice that is both physical and meditative, deeply rooted in the philosophy of classical Tantra and non-dualism. Inspired particularly by Kashmir Shaivism, his classes explore movement, breath, and awareness to cultivate inner peace and a deeper connection to oneself.

Far from inviting us to withdraw from the world, this philosophy encourages us to fully embrace life in all its richness and beauty, both inner and outer. A yoga where presence takes precedence over performance, and where each practice becomes an invitation to live more consciously, freely, and fully.

David's journey is a living tapestry of human experiences, spiritual practices, and foundational encounters. He grew up in Madagascar, deeply influenced by the warmth, simplicity, and kindness of human relationships, where language barriers dissolved in play, laughter, movement, and shared humanity. Early on, this experience revealed to him an essential intuition: everyone carries within them an innate light, capable of shining beyond life's challenges and complexities.

His initial spiritual education, rooted in a religious framework, made him sensitive to prayer and contemplation, but never resonated with a vision separating the soul from the divine. He naturally turned towards practices based on direct and lived experience, oriented towards reconnection and unity. During his first trip to India in 1995, a powerful meditation accompanied by Indian classical music (rāga) marked a decisive turning point and opened a long path of meditative exploration. After an initial immersion in the Hare Krishna movement, he became firmly grounded in the practice of Vipassana, which remains the foundation of his personal practice.

At the start of his marketing career, David discovered postural yoga as a support for meditation and an antidote to the stress of the professional world. He began studying in Geneva in 2003, gradually delving deeper into Hatha and Kundalini yoga. In 2007, a decisive encounter occurred: moved by the vibration of a chant sung by Amy Ippoliti, he traveled to Paris to follow her teachings and discovered Anusara Yoga a path that fully aligned with his dharma, that of the heart. He then continued his training with Amy, and the founder of Anusara Yoga, John Friend, and many teachers from this lineage.

His journey also takes him to Ganeshpuri, India, where he experiences the sweetness and grace of Bhagavan Nityananda. The generous teachings of Douglas Brooks, along with the in-depth study of the non-dual philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism, enriched today by the contemporary rigor and scholarship of Christopher Wallis, form the main source of his modern studies and current transmission.

In 2009, after his initial career in marketing at Procter & Gamble, David founded AOM YOGA in Geneva, with the intention of creating a vibrant community rooted in self-discovery, alignment, and a yoga practice experienced as a service to life and the collective.

For David, yoga is more than a discipline: it is a way of life, a means of cultivating intention, attention, and love, and consciously weaving the fabric of his life. His teaching combines intuitive movement with precise alignment, in an atmosphere that is both light, warm, and deeply respectful of each person's experience.

Beyond yoga, David is a mindful entrepreneur, founder of AOM by Mishra-Newbery, and a passionate student of the wisdom of the fungal world. Whether as a barista, nature explorer, or teacher, he is dedicated to creating spaces where connection, authenticity, and joy can emerge.

For my students

Please ensure you have a copy of Tantra Illuminated by Dr. Christopher Wallis, which is currently the main source and reference manual for our studies. Through his years of in-depth study of Sanskrit and ancient tantric texts, as well as his rigorous and vibrant embodiment of the practices, Dr. Christopher Wallis is, in my view, one of the most accessible and prolific practitioners and teachers of classical tantra today.  https://www.tantrailluminated.org/

Thank you for being here.
